Sherry Regina Basden-Heard was born Sherry Regina Cunningham, the first daughter and third child of four children of William and Ethel Cunningham in Washington D.C.  Growing up, Sherry had attended Grimke Elementary School; then attended Garnett Patterson Middle School in Washington DC.

In 1967, Sherry and her parents had relocated to Jersey City, NJ – where her dad, William Cunningham, became the first African-American Trainman for the Railroad.  Sherry had continued her schooling at P.S. 15 and later graduated from Snyder High School.

Afterwards, Sherry decided to return to Washington, DC and attended the prestigious Howard University to study to become a teacher.  However, she soon found out that teaching wasn’t in the future and would later return to New Jersey for a new career path.

In 1973, Sherry had married her first husband, David Basden and they had 1 daughter, Jennifer-Joanne Basden.  Unfortunately, Mr. Basden had went to be with the Lord and Sherry kept a hold of her faith to move forward and care for their daughter.

Between 1982-1983, Sherry took part of a program at Jersey City Medical Center and became a full-time student and worked part-time as an X-Ray Technician.  In 1983, Sherry graduated from Jersey City Medical Center and became a Licensed Practicing Nurse.  Afterwards, she found employment as an LPN (Licensed Practicing Nurse) for Hudson County Disease Control Center for the next 18 years.

In 1994, Sherry was blessed by meeting her second husband, Mr. Carl Heard, Jr., who was also a member of Friendship Baptist church, then in 1998 they both married.

In 2000, Sherry had decided to retire from Hudson County Disease Control Center.

With determination, she had enrolled at Columbia University in New York and received her Bachelor’s Science Degree in Nursing in 2002.

Presently, Sherry is happily retired and devote her time to family, church and friends.  Sherry’s activities at Friendship Baptist includes: member of the Nurses’ Auxiliary; Pastor/Church’s Aide Ministry, Missionary Ministry; Senior Choir, Ambassador of Christ Choir; and in the past, Sherry was a Youth-Advisor for the youth-choir, Voices of Promises, for 11 years.

Sherry’s hobbies are cooking, singing, relaxing and enjoying time with her grandchildren.
