Pastor Sykes is a native of Tallahassee, Florida and is married to Mrs. Fannie Steen Sykes. He is the father of three children, Lynne Sykes-Horace, of Plainfield, NJ, Tonya P. Sykes of Charlotte, NC and John C. Sykes of Jersey City, NJ.
Pastor Sykes attended Lincoln High School of Tallahassee Florida where he completed requirements for college prep and certification in Drafting and Design. He attended Florida A&M University majoring in Industrial Education. He also received a Bachelors Degree in Electrical Engineering and Technology from the Cleveland Institute of Technology. He later attended the Eastman School of Marketing and North Eastern Bible College. He has also completed the Local Housing Authority and Municipal Redevelopment Agency Training Program through the New Jersey Department of Community Affairs and Rutgers University.
Pastor Sykes is a Vietnam era veteran of the U.S Air Force where he served in various assignments as an Aerial Reconnaissance and Aircrew Systems Training Specialist working with flight crews on various reconnaissance systems and aircraft types.
In 1970 Rev. Sykes joined the Eastman Kodak Company, Business Systems Marketing Division as a Systems Engineer and later worked as a Customer Engineer and Marketing Specialist, and as New York, New Jersey District Engineering Specialist.
In 1975 Pastor Sykes joined the Singer Company, Kearfott Division as coordinator of Special Projects and later moved on to the Link Commercial Airline Flight Simulation Division where he worked as a Test Director, Project Engineer and Test Engineering Manager.
In 1985 Pastor Sykes joined Simuflite Training International, a division of the Singer Company, where he served as Director of Engineering Services and Flight Crew Training for the Commercial Airline Training Division, working with flight crews on Boeing 737, 727 and 747 Aircraft. One of the highlights of this position was training and working with the flight crews on Air Force One.
Pastor Sykes began his work in the ministry in 1977 serving as Associate Minister at the Shiloh Baptist Church, Plainfield, NJ, later moving on to serve as assistant to the Pastor of the Concord Baptist Church, of Perth Amboy, NJ, and later the St. Luke Baptist Church of Patterson, NJ.
In 1992 Pastor Sykes retired from the business world to devote himself to ministry full time and has for the past twenty two years served as Pastor of the Friendship Baptist Church of Bayonne, N.J. Under Pastor Sykes’s leadership the church has continued to grow in the areas of membership, spirituality and community service. Under his leadership and by the grace of God, a new 22,000 square foot facility located at 41-45 West 20Th Street, Bayonne, NJ was completed in 2007. The new facility includes a sanctuary that seats 500, a day care center and a three story office tower that houses ever expanding community outreach activities. Pastor Sykes is also the founder of the Bayonne Community Action Project, a Community Housing Development Organization that has developed eighteen affordable housing units in the city of Bayonne and BCAP/Build America Association that operates an Early Childhood Development Center. He presently serves as President and CEO of both organizations.
Pastor Sykes is active in the local community and serves as Vice Chairman of the Board of Commissioners of The Bayonne Housing Authority, Vice President of the Bayonne Branch NAACP and has served on the Board of Directors of several local, state and national ministerial organizations. In 2011 Pastor Sykes was appointed Hudson County Delegate to the New Jersey Democratic Electoral College and continues his interest in state and local politics.
Pastor Sykes’ motto “seek ye first the kingdom of God and His righteousness and all else will be added unto you” has served him well as he continues in his duties to God and His people.
